How to choose a cylindrical insert: types and safety features

The cylinder is the heart of every lock, and there are dozens of types on the market. In this guide, we will look at what types of cylinders exist, which security features to ask about, and what indicative price to expect.

Basic types of cylindrical inserts

Before you start selecting a specific model, it is useful to know what type of insert your door actually requires. The difference lies not only in the price but mainly in how the insert will be used in practice:

• Classic (full) insert - standard solution for most apartment and house doors, operated by a key from both sides. Suitable where you want the door locked even from the inside, for example at the entrance to an apartment.
• Button insert (thumbwheel) - key on one side, rotating knob for quick unlocking without a key on the other. Commonly used on escape routes and doors requiring rapid exit from the inside, such as corridor or cellar doors.
• Half-insert - shorter variant for padlocks, letterboxes or special applications where a through-bolt system is not required.
• Modular system - allows combining different lengths and types of ends according to specific doors; advantageous for non-standard dimensions or if you plan to change the hardware in the future.
• Electronic and chip inserts - Card-, chip- or mobile app-controlled inserts are also becoming increasingly common. They are mainly suitable where managing multiple users is required, in rented flats, offices or shared entrances, but a certified mechanical insert remains a reliable and cheaper option for ordinary flats.

How many keys to have made

Inserts are standardly supplied with three keys, which is usually sufficient for a household, one for each member and one spare kept by a trusted person. For inserts with card-based key control, you can have additional copies made at any later time, as you keep the card and do not need to arrange further purchases when moving or if family circumstances change. For flats with multiple users (rentals, shared offices), it is worthwhile to opt for a higher number of keys from the outset to avoid creating provisional unauthorised copies.
